Hypnosis, when used therapeutically is a state of deep mental and physical relaxation, sometimes referred to as 'trance'.
When in an hypnotic state, you remain aware of your surroundings and you see, hear and feel as you would normally, but in a very relaxed way. The effect is very similar to day dreaming or the state you are in immediately before fully awakening from sleep.
Our mind operates on two levels:
The conscious level that is involved in decision making and deliberate actions and the subconscious level that looks after the autonomic actions that you are not 'consciously' aware of, such as the regulation of your heart beat, walking and talking.
The hypnotic state provides access to the subconscious level of the mind and this is where the desired changes and suggestions take place.
Clinical/therapeutic hypnosis is not stage hypnosis.
You will never be under the hypnotherapist's 'control' and you will never be asked to do anything you would not normally do in your everyday life.
